I’m Michael McKinlay, And I’m Going To The Moon! (…In My Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear Of Course!!!)

April 5th, 2007 by Mike

A few months ago I saw the movie Jackass #2. I really enjoyed it and one of my favorite scenes was when Johnny Knoxville got on a rocket and proclaimed, “I’m Johnny Knoxville, and I’m going to the moon!”

I was recently in Japan and I came across a number of interesting sights. Thankfully I could take pictures of these sights, with my friend’s digital camera! So over the coming weeks I will post stories featuring these interesting photos from Japan.

Today I will start off by featuring my “I’m Michael McKinlay, And I’m Going To The Moon!” article. How could I possibly do this while in Japan you ask? Well this is how…

In Japan, English is everywhere. The only problem is that the “look” of English is considered stylish and so there are often a lot of mistakes or no meaning, when used. The thing is, no one cares.. Now before you go judging this part of Japan, think back to the last time you saw a Westerner sporting a Chinese character t-shirt, or even a tattoo. Many Westerner’s are guitly of the same thing and get the meanings totally confused. Therefore, the English in Japan looks ridiculous to us native English speakers, and conversely, the Japanese here in North America looks ridiculous to the Japanese.

Anyway in Japan, Mitsubishi makes a passenger van called the “Delica.” I don’t know what “Delica” means but what I found funny was the English written on the side of the van, and the name of certain models of the “Delica.” For example, in Canada a particular model of car may have the word “sport” or “rx type” written on it. Well the “Delica” often has the words “Space Gear” written on it.. So anyway I thought this was kind of funny and so this is why I say, “I’m Michael McKinlay, And I’m Going To The Moon!” Check these pics out….

Awesome Mike! I know you told me he could’ve been killed, but I didn’t realize it was THAT close!

Great post! Looking forward to more Japan pics.

Unbelievably, it apparently stands for DELIcate CArrier. What’s delicate about this 4WD, seven seat monstrosity is hard to fathom, but they are wonderful machines and I mourn the sale of ours every time I pull up at traffic lights and can’t see across the cars next to me.

Hey thanks for the explanation! I never would have guessed that!

It’s kind of funny because I’ve seen a few Delicas in Canada! They were imported obviously from Japan since they don’t sell these cars here. In fact I’ve seen a number of right-hand drive Japanese sports cars in Canada and they really seem to be gaining in popularity. I don’t really know why since I imagine they’d be tough to service but then again, perhaps its the whole novelty of having a car that you can’t really get here!
