Today, I read Mr. Gary Lee’s post about rising gas prices. Gary said that we should all not buy gas on a particular day to sock it to the oil companies. I love the motivation for the idea but unfortunately I don’t think it will work.

It won’t work cause if people don’t buy gas today, they will just buy it tomorrow. So really, one day of slow sales isn’t going to make a difference to the oil company. In the end, they are just going to sell just as much fuel, the only difference will be that it will be sold a day later. I think the best solution would be to just use less oil altogether.

To me, its almost become comical whenever the price of gas goes up. I mean the results are so predictable. Everyone gets really mad and complains about how they can’t afford to drive because the price is too high. Yet, in reality very few change their driving habits. (Just look at how many SUV’s are on the road.) I mean the story is always the same. You also have to keep in mind that fuel for a vehicle,(even at today’s prices) is really only a small cost in comparison to all of the other things necessary with ownership such as insurance, maintenance, accidents, and depreciation.

Anyway I think the only thing one can do is to drive less. Buy or rent a place that is close to the places you need to go to like your work or shopping. Or a place that is close to good public transportation.

I could go on and on about the evils of automobiles and all of the waste that is associated with them. Don’t get me wrong, I used to have my own car and needed it for transportation but I’m so glad I dont need one now. I’m sure one day that I will need to get one but hopefully public transit, and renting vehicles will continue to work for me for a long while to come!
