Hard Gay

June 29th, 2007 by Mike

I used to live in Japan, and one of my favorite things about the country is the crazy sense of humor. Japan, much like the States has a very strong popular culture. In fact, fads come and go there all the time. One of those fads was “Hard Gay.”

“Hard Gay” is a character developed by a Japanese comedian named Masaki Sumitani. I could tell you more about Hard Gay but I think the video says it all. A few years ago, Hard Gay became an overnight sensation. Unfortunately, for Hard Gay, his act ran its course and consequetly has faded back in to obscurity. While his act was a bit repetitious, I will say that if you can look past the gyrations, he actually makes some pretty funny observations.

In the following Hard Gay goes around Japan and attempts to help people with their everyday problems. In the first scene he attends to a small child who is crying on the street and tries to cheer him up by comparing himself to other Japanese super heroes like Ultraman, and Anpanman. (Anpanman is a cartoon character, made out of bread who saves starving creatures and humans by letting them bite off his head. He then regenerates a new one. I know it sounds funny but every child in Japan loves Anpanman!)

In the second segment, Hard Gay helps a young lady who is being picked up by some guy off the street. I love how he defends her honor by telling the guy that she is from the country and has big dreams and is just trying to do her best in the big city.

Finally, in the third segment, Hard Gay helps a guy who is handing out small tissue packages to people passing by. In big cities in Japan, handing out tissues is a common practice as these tissue packages have advertising. These promotional tissues are a popular way for companies to promote their products or services. I wonder if I can get some Hard Gay tissues… I mean they are soft on the skin and have so many uses!

Anyway enjoy!!!

Nick Ramsay desu! Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!

Actually, although I think HG is really funny to laugh at, for about a year my students kept mimicking his Fuuu! It drove me around the bend!

There are more Hard Gay videos on YouTube. I was watching one where he checks if people really are grateful to their father’s on Father’s Day. Very funny stuff. Take a look if you haven’t seen this one before:

Yes I do know about him but actually I don’t really like him. I think Hard Gay was much more interesting because HG’s comments were usually quite funny. Of course HG always did the same dance and that became kind of boring so that’s why he is no longer popular. Too bad.
