Drumming and YouTube
August 1st, 2007 by Mike
I’m a big fan of YouTube(you may have guessed this as many of my posts include YouTube videos.) I’m also a big rock fan and one of my favorite bands are the Foo Fighters. I also used to drum when I was younger. So what do you get when you combine all of these passions of mine? That’s right… a YouTube video of some guy drumming to a Foo Fighters song!
To me, watching someone play drums is like watching a ballet or a chess match. (Not that I know how to play chess or even understand ballet, but thats beside the point.) Timing and coordination are extremely important. I mean you can potentially have up to 4 limbs going all at different speeds and in directions, and if one of them is off you are going to hear it! Watching a good drummer is like watching a high performance engine in action. Everything is fast, coordinated, and in the exact right place at the exact moment.
The video below is pretty good but you may notice that the drummer makes a few mistakes. However, you’ve gotta give him credit as he is playing a difficult song. I’ve listened to this song a million times but even if I had the coordination down I’d still probably screw up quite quickly as I can’t remember all of the fills that are used.
My favorite section of the video is when there are 2 minutes and 20 seconds remaining. From that point on the drummer goes to town and puts on a clinic! There are so many fills and change-ups and its amazing to watch and listen to.
The song featured is called the “Best of You” by the Foo Fighters. By the way it takes about 55 seconds before the actual drumming begins, so please be patient. Enjoy!

To my untrained I, I couldn’t see any mistakes. The guy’s got skills, Mike! Nice vid!
However… the video I was hoping for was the one of you! When are you going to upload your own videos to YouTube? How about the one you emailed me of yourself miming on the drums? Or the one when you’re a “king” ?!
We want to see the real Michael McKinlay!
