Dinos Hockey
October 16th, 2007 by Mike

Last Friday night I went to a University of Calgary hockey game. The University of Calgary’s hockey team are called the Dinosaurs(in red). The Dinos played the University of Alberta Golden Bears(in green). The Dinos had a rough start and gave up 4 goals, however late in the game the Dinos started to make a comeback. In the last period they came close to tying it to force overtime. Unfortunately the Dinos could not score a tying goal and ended up losing 4-3.
I work at the University of Calgary and when I was a university student I often watched University hockey games. The nice thing about going to games as a student is that they are free, and you get to watch highly skilled players. Almost all of the players on a university team have played in major junior hockey or professional leagues, such as the AHL (American Hockey League) or ECHL (East Coast Hockey League.)
Here’s a picture of what happens when there is an intermission in the game. The machine featured is called a “Zamboni” and it cleans the ice! This machine scoops up the snow created by the player’s skates and also resurfaces the ice by spreading warm water on it. This process will make the ice smooth and fast again.

Here’s a picture of players chasing the puck into the corner. I feel sorry for the U of A player(the one in green) because he is about to be crushed in to the boards by the U of C player. Oh well, that’s the sacrifice that you have to make when you want to get to the puck first.

In this photo the Dinos have a penalty and are therefore are playing with only 4 players, plus the goal keeper. During a penalty, the Dinos are forced to play with 4 men instead of the usual 5.

Hopefully the Dinos will do better next time!

Is that you there on the ice Mike??
North American sports make me laugh with their team names. I mean, come on, the Dinos? The Bears? It sounds like kindergarten! What’s wrong with Calgary University versus Alberta University? On the bright side, they aren’t as embarrassing as Japanese baseball teams which are named after their sponsors AND have a childish nickname. For example: Softbank Hawks vs Nippon Ham Fighters !!!!!
If the teams didn’t have names it would be so boring… I mean come on, Manchester United? Whoever thought of that name? And just who is United anyway???
LOL, but I suppose you’re right, names like the Dinos and the Bears make the sport sound like a Harry Potter book - I mean, in a very not boring way.
