Peyto Glacier - Jasper National Park

October 18th, 2007 by Mike

Recently, I took a trip out to Jasper National Park. It’s only a 3 hour trip from where I live(Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and so I thought it would be fun to make it a day trip. To get to Jasper National Park from Calgary, you have to drive to Lake Louise and then take the Icefields Parkway(also known as Highway 93.) There are many scenic spots along this highway and there are plenty of places snap a few shots from.

One of the places where I stopped to take a closer look was a place called Peyto Glacier. The look out point is a short hike from the highway parking lot but well worth it.

The mountains are of course beautiful and it’s amazing to see the turquoise coloured lake at the bottom. The reason for the lake’s color is due to glacial silt being carried from the glacier, and in to the lake. Apparently the silt stays suspended in the water giving the lake it’s beautiful turquoise color.

When I was at the lookout point I noticed that there was a speaker box that explained the features of the lake and glacier. Since this place is in the middle of nowhere there was no electricity. Therefore, to listen to the presentation you had to crank the box to generate power. The box had presentations in four different languages, English, French, Japanese, and Spanish. It was interesting listening to each language because subtle differences in each language could be heard. Check out my video below to hear what I’m referring to!

What a beautiful place. Those mountains are stunnng. Are they the ones in the blog’s banner? The cranky speaker box thing is pretty cool, particularly the music. My foreign language skills aren’t very good though, and even listening to you speak with a cold was a challenge!
