U of C Dino’s Penalty Shot
October 23rd, 2007 by Mike
On October 20th, I went to a men’s hockey game between the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and University of Calgary’s Dinos. This was the second game of the series and just like the first, was another close game. However one thing happened during the game that was slightly out of the ordinary. The Dino’s were awarded a penalty shot. Penalty shots are rarely granted in the middle of a regular game but on October 20th, it happened.
The reason why penalty shots are rarely awarded is because a team has to lose a clear scoring opportunity, due to a foul committed by the opposing team. For a more clearly defined explanation, please go here.
On Saturday night Wade Davis of the University of Calgary’s Dinos was granted a penalty shot. Here’s the vid:
Sadly, the U of S’s goalie stopped him. However in Davis’s defence, his regular position is as a defence man and therefore he is more used to preventing goals than scoring them. One redeeming feature of the play is the reaction of Davis’s teammates after he came up short. You’ll notice that they still give him a pat on the back and it’s nice to see that when the going gets tough.

Good sportsmanship…. but how did he miss??? The puck is tiny and the goal is huge by comparison!!!
Umm there is thing called a goalkeeper who is between him and the net…
Good point. I think they should make goalkeepers smaller. How are you supposed to score when he’s completely blocking the goal?
Because unlike soccer, hockey is a game of skill and we don’t need a goal that is 7,000,000 square kilometers large to score a goal. Just kidding, I like soccer…
