One of the most amazing things about the border between Canada and the U.S. is that it’s the world’s longest undefended border at approximately 8,900 km or 5,500 miles long and when I say undefended, I mean it! Take a look at the photo below. What do you see? A road and a field. I think that road in the distance is the demarcation for the border, if it isn’t then I’m sure it’s running parallel to it.

Of course there are controlled border crossings but there is no fence. In fact, up until recently Canadians didn’t even need a passport to cross the border. All we needed was a driver’s license. I know that’s pretty surprising in this day and age after 9/11 but perhaps that was a testament to the fact that although Canada and the U.S. have their differences, we are pretty good neighbors. Hopefully it stays that way!

My name is Michael McKinlay and I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada. Although I was born here, I have lived in a few other places in Western Canada such as, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, and Edmonton. I also spent time in Hong Kong and Japan. [
So you’re saying you do need a passport now? And how about fingerprinting? Are you telling me that the US doesn’t fingerprint people crossing the Canadian border? Doesn’t that make a mockery of their anti-terrorism measures? Wow, it makes me proud to live in Japan, a country where no foreigners, not even Canadians, avoid the fingerprinting machines!
At this point you will not be fingerprinted when you drive across the border. If you fly in though, you will.
Yep I guess it’s just cause those Americans love us! Like I said in a previous post, they probably don’t think we could be terrorists cause we’re just a bunch of moose lovers!
I think the Canadian border control should finger-print Americans wanting to cross your border!
You have to keep those pesky Americans from drinking your beer!!
Keith
PS. How strange that they don’t finger-print you crossing the border! Nick is so right and it does
make a total mockery of the states so-called border control.
Yep, I agree with both of your points Keith. What really kills me about U.S. border security is the fact that they have refused to put up a wall between the States and Mexico.
I mean here in Canada we have a pretty friendly relationship with our American neighbors. So do good neighbors really need fences? Nope, and so we don’t.
The Mexican-U.S. border on the other hand has thousands of “unauthorized visitors” crossing in to the States all the time and while it’s a big issue there, it continues to amaze me that they don’t put a wall up. Then again, I guess doing that would make it much more difficult for big companies to hire slave labor, and we couldn’t have that, now could we?
Im pretty sure there are border fences/wall between the US-Mexican border.
Yes part of the Mexican/U.S. border is fenced.
Logic and the American Government go together like oil and water Mike. If there was a wall between Mexico and America, Camp David, the White House and Bush’s ranch would be in need of all new staff!!
Keith
If you read AMCITS and DHS websites, you will find that any non-Canadian (or Mexican of Taiwanese for some special reason) will have their fingerprints taken when crossing the Canadian border.
To Mike: You should research how walls and borders work in other countries: it does not.
Thanks Prot. I totally agree. Walls don’t keep people out.
i have a friend his a belgium citizen his comeing to canada, and from canada his brother his driven him down to the US,i want to know if they need a fingerprint to enter the US or what do they need?
I really don’t know, but it seems America is fingerprinting everyone these days! So I’d be prepared! Oh yeah and he should have a passport and perhaps a visa if one is needed for Belgian citizens!
