Driving down to Arizona from Canada is a long drive, (3000 km or 1600 miles one way) and while long drives tend to be boring, I enjoyed it. When you cover that kind of distance you are bound to experience a wide variety of landscapes and see some interesting things. Sure, I could have flown to Phoenix in in 3 hours as opposed to driving for 3 days, but then again I wouldn’t have seen all of this!

Ok so maybe there isn’t much to brag about in this picture as there really isn’t much of anything, but now you know why they call the state of Montana “Big Sky Country”
As you drive further in to Montana you start to hit some higher elevations and it’s starts to become hilly.

You would think that the further south you drive, the less snow you would see, but then again as we went south we started getting in to the mountains.

Like I said it was kind of funny because at the Canadian border there was hardly any snow. Yet even after the mountains we came across more snow. This next picture was taken in Idaho which is south of Montana.

Then it was on to Utah. Utah is famous for having the 2002 Winter Olympics and they have a lot of great skiing there. In fact, their license plates have the slogan “Ski Utah!” Mmmm… not much snow here but I’m sure it’s a different story up in the mountains.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey so far but for now I must leave this as to be continued… Next time we’ll be visiting Nevada and Arizona! Oh, the excitement!

My name is Michael McKinlay and I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada. Although I was born here, I have lived in a few other places in Western Canada such as, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, and Edmonton. I also spent time in Hong Kong and Japan. [
Amazing photos, Mike, but did you really need that car navigation thingy? I mean, it’s a straight road! How could you possibly get lost?
Drive 3000 km on a “straight road” and you might just find out.
With no igloos Nick, how do you expect a Canadian to join the dots???? God if there were no
Circle K’s in Gifu, I would never find my way!!!
Keith
“Follow the road until you come to a Circle K and turn left. Go straight until you find another
Circle K and turn right”
You know Keith, for an Australian who has lived in Japan for a good number of years, you sure know us Canadians well! I mean every time I’m out in my snowshoes and moccasins, searching for moose to befriend, I become completely disoriented if no igloos are around.
What do you mean befriend???? C’mon we all know what you Canadian men do with moose!! (The same thing us Aussie men do with Kangaroos haa haa haa only we get more kick for our buck!!)
Geez you only got your first real road a few years ago!!
Keith
Once again Keith, you’ve got our number!
Whoa! I almost forgot what snow looked like until now. Thanks for all of the pictures.
No problem Steve, and thanks for coming to MichaelMcKinlay.com! Please come again!
