What is OshiboriArt?

April 1st, 2008 by Mike

Oshibori

For centuries the question has been asked, “What is oshibori art and how does it affect me?” Well, I’m glad you asked! The quick answer to that question can be found at www.OshiboriArt.com and the long answer can be found right here on MichaelMcKinlay.com!

Oshibori Art is a great new website that my net buddy 4 life, Nick Ramsay created. “Oshibori” are wet hand towels that are presented at Japanese restaurants just before a meal is served. Customers use them to wash their hands. In the winter the towels are served heated, and in the summer the towels are served cold. If you like “origami” (the Japanese art of folding paper in to different shapes) you are sure to love Oshibori Art!

Nick shows us how to kill time next time you are stuck in Japan, waiting for your hot bowl of tonkatsu ramen or okonomiyaki. OshiboriArt shows you how to fold these towels in to wonderful little animals like rabbits, elephants, birds, and cows. He also shows us how to create a croissant, and even a man! If that doesn’t tickle your fancy then perhaps you can go to the “adult side” of his site and make a “willy.” (Nick is originally from England so you can guess what a “willy” is. If you can’t, then go here!

So there you have it, OshiboriArt. Now get on it and learn how to make that “willy” to impress all of your friends! As Kenny Drebsen aka “King of the Burn” once said, “learn it, do it, use it, and then learn it! I’m gonna take a quick five.”

Keith, you can’t bury this post. What do you think this is, JapanSoc?

Besides, Mike is absolutely right. People have been asking about oshibori art for centuries. Okay? Got it? It’s a fact. Period.

Mike, thank you for your kind article about Japanese-style towel origami. What I like most about it is the simplicity. Although it’s fun for adults when they are out in a restaurant, it’s also really easy for kids to pick up, and it keeps them busy for hours. I recommend every ESL teacher learn to make a couple of the animals and impress the children in their class.

So, have you mastered any of them yet, Mike? How about the Godzilla one?

I’m glad you liked my review Nick and I was happy to do it. Perhaps Keith can use OshiboriArt to find out why people have been asking these ancient questions.

Haven’t learned the Godzilla one but I am looking forward to getting started on the “willy” one.

It’s just common knowledge Keith!

Here’s your proof. In this ancient Japanese picture, a teacher of the “oshibori” art is enraged by his student’s lack of common knowledge. He has grabbed him by the collar and is about to give him a good whipping with his tool of the trade - an oshibori. ;)

I’ve seen the evidence and there is no disputing it! Thanks Nick!
