Nagoya is Japan’s third biggest city and while the Japanese don’t consider it a very touristy place, it has some interesting spots. The picture above and the picture below are taken from just above Nagoya train station.

This statue is right outside of Nagoya Station and is famous among the locals. I can’t remember exactly, but I think her name might be “nana-chan.” “Nana-chan” often has her clothes changed for her and I guess wears whatever the store beside her is selling! Now that’s promotion!
If you get a chance to visit Nagoya you should check out the area of Sakae. Sakae is Nagoya’s downtown district and is located only 2 km from Nagoya’s main train station. You’ll find the Nagoya TV tower there and if you like you can take the elevator to the tower’s observation deck. (For a small fee of course.)

If your short on cash then just go hang out at Oasis 21. What’s Oasis 21? It’s a futuristic park in Sakae and there you’ll find many restaurants and places to shop(which is just where you want to be since your short on cash
.) Oasis 21 is a bit hard to describe but you’ve basically got a small lake that sits a few hundred feet off the ground. There’s also a park area, which is a great spot for having a picnic. Another cool thing about Sakae is that it’s one of the few places that you can relax in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of Nagoya.

I don’t really know what this dude is all about but you know, whatever…

One more random picture from somewhere in Nagoya, probably near Sakae…

My name is Michael McKinlay and I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada. Although I was born here, I have lived in a few other places in Western Canada such as, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, and Edmonton. I also spent time in Hong Kong and Japan. [
I kind of think of Nagoya as my hometown since that’s where I started my journey in Japan, and there’s so much more to the city than “Nana-chan Ningyo”. I hope you have the time to explore it more on your visit next week. Are you sure Nagoya is Japan’s third biggest city? I know Yokohama is the third most populous behind Tokyo and Osaka, but you might be right if you mean “biggest” as in size of the area.
I’m sorry my post didn’t live up to your expectations Nick. I just took the best photos I had of the place and wrote about those places!
Yeah it must be land area cause I am sure I read somewhere it was number 3 in Japan.
Hi Mike,
Just wanted to thank you for your Nagoya specific posts and pics we are moving there for 18 mths, come June, and so I am scouring the blogs for advice and info and it is rare to find posts that are not just about Tokyo!
Hey I’m glad you liked it! Keep on coming back to MichaelMcKinlay.com! You may want to check out my Crazy Japan category which is listed in the sidebar of the blog! Enjoy!
wow, what a blast from the past! I was trying to explain nana-chan ningyo to my gringo friends, and they just didn’t get it. And then, voila, your photo! Thanks man, that statue is just inexplicable without a photo.
And to think that they’ve put a lake in the air near Central Tower in Sakae….boy do I need to take trip back to Japan!
Are you still nihon ni iru?
Sorry for the late reply! That lake is actually on a roof above the Sakae shopping centre! It’s a very cool place and it’s called Oasis 21! Check it out next time!
I’m no longer in Japan but I will probably visit a little later this year.
WOW!!! Even sorrier for my later reply. Have a great time when you go. Can you take a dip in that lake?
I don`t think so… I`ve never seen anyone do it and people would probably freak out if you tried.
