Japan is famous for a lot of things and one of those things is the Bullet Train. Known as the Shinkansen to the Japanese, these trainsĀ reach speeds of up 300 km/hr. If you ever get the chance to go to Japan, I’d strongly recommend you try it. this is something that you have to try. It’s a bit expensive to ride the Shinkansen, but the experience is worth it. I mean, how many times do you get to travel at 300 km/hr legally along the ground?
One thing you can do to minimize your cost is purchase the Japan Rail Pass. To do this, you have to buy it before you leave for Japan and you must be on a Visitor Visa. This pass entitles you to unlimited travel on all Japan Railway lines, which cover nearly all of Japan. The only exception is that they are not valid for the “Nozomi” class of bullet train, which just so happens to be the fastest of all bullet trains. Don’t worry, though, the “Nozomi” is only a little bit faster than the other trains and so you’ll still get to go fast!
Here’s a couple of videos I took when I was in Japan last year.
The first one shows a train leaving the station from a dead start. It’s amazing how long these trains are and how quickly they can accelerate. Check out the conductor at the end of the train. Don’t blink!
The second video shows what the ride looks like from the inside of the train. My camera work is a bit shaky but I can tell you that the ride is extremely smooth.

My name is Michael McKinlay and I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada. Although I was born here, I have lived in a few other places in Western Canada such as, Saskatoon, Regina, Medicine Hat, and Edmonton. I also spent time in Hong Kong and Japan. [
Ah the Shinny – how I LOVE it! If you, like me, are one of those people that wishes your plane would just continue on the ground at the speed it’s at before it takes off – well the Shinny is your chance.
My FAVOURITE thing about the Shinny, though, isn’t the speed it’s how, living in nagoya as I do – at any time I can rock up to the station, buy a (not inexpensive but not horrifying) ticket and be in Tokyo in an hour and a half or Kyoto in 40mins or Osaka. I’ve only done it a few times but GOSH it’s fun to do!
Thanks for your comment Danielle!
Quite a spiffy new blog design, Mr. McKinlay. Very nice!
Thanks Heather!
Oh! What a nice videos!! That takes me back

You are welcome! I’m glad you liked it! Where are you from in Japan?
